FYI: A Tesla Model Y’s advanced features recently led to a driver’s test failure in New Jersey.
Tesla’s Tech Sparks Driver’s License Test Controversy
In a recurring scenario for innovative automotive technology, a Tesla Model Y’s features caused a stir during a driving test in New Jersey, resulting in a test failure for a 16-year-old.
Teen’s Test Troubles
New Jersey resident Lochlan Keefer was set to earn his driver’s license when he arrived with his father, James Keefer, in their 2022 Tesla Model Y. However, the test took an unexpected turn when the examiner accused Lochlan of utilizing parking and stopping assistance, leading to his failure.
Reasons for Failure
The examiner’s comment was straightforward: “Had the parking and stopping assistance on never stepped on the brake to stop himself, let the vehicle stop itself.” This suggests a misunderstanding of Tesla’s capabilities.
Misunderstood Technology
James Keefer clarified they do not use Tesla’s Full Self-Driving package, which features tools like Autopark. The confusion likely stemmed from Tesla’s regenerative braking, which slows the car when the accelerator is released, storing energy in the battery.
Policy Dispute
Following the failure, James requested another attempt with disabled regenerative braking. The examiner insisted on a two-week wait, and a supervisor confirmed the decision. Despite this, the DMV couldn’t provide the alleged violated policy, sparking controversy.
Not an Isolated Case
This incident is not unique to New Jersey. Reports from California and Arizona have similarly seen Tesla drivers face test failures due to misunderstandings about driver assistance systems.
Conclusion
As technology advances, understanding these features becomes crucial for fair driving assessments. This incident underscores the need for updated training for examiners on modern automotive technologies.
