FYI: Michigan Embraces the Future with Innovative Lamppost EV Chargers
Michigan has taken a leap forward in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with its first actively functioning lamppost charger, courtesy of Voltpost, a pioneering New York-based startup. This initiative aims to transform ordinary street lights into practical EV charging stations, seamlessly integrating electric mobility into urban landscapes.
Revolutionizing Street Lights into Charging Hubs
Voltpost has unveiled its first publicly available lamppost charger at the American Center for Mobility in Ypsilanti Township, not far from Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan. This innovative approach allows cities to embrace EV technology without the cumbersome and costly updates usually associated with charging infrastructure.
Simple, Efficient, and Accessible Charging
These advanced chargers, installed in under an hour, provide Level 2 charging capabilities. Each lamppost unit can fuel up to four electric vehicles with integrated, retractable cables. Although the charging speed is moderate compared to DC fast chargers, this setup is perfect for vehicles parked for a longer duration—ideal for those attending events or enjoying a night’s outing.
Strategic Installations in the Detroit Area
The project in Michigan represents the beginning, with 11 additional installations planned for later this year around the Detroit area. This follows the successful launch of Voltpost’s first public lamppost charger in Oak Park, Illinois. Jeffrey Prosserman, CEO and co-founder of Voltpost, expressed excitement about this milestone, emphasizing the importance of accessible and equitable EV charging.
Connectivity and Control with AT&T Partnership
Adding a tech-savvy twist, Voltpost collaborates with AT&T to equip Detroit’s lamppost chargers with internet connectivity. This allows for remote monitoring and efficient troubleshooting, ensuring a reliable charging experience for EV users.
Conclusion
Michigan’s rollout of lamppost EV chargers marks a significant step towards integrating sustainable transport solutions across cities. By leveraging existing infrastructure, Voltpost is facilitating an eco-friendly future while making EV charging more accessible.
